First Generation (1969-1981)

In February 1969, the "Light Bus" version of the Diana small truck was completely re-prepared and released as a coaster. While the light bus shared the frame with Diana, Coaster adopted an original frame with a wheelbase extended by 270 mm.

By reducing the floor and renewing the body's design, Coaster increased the cabin significantly. The standard model had seating capacity of 26, which was more than one with a light bus. Available engines included 2-liter 93 hp petrol unit (5R) and 2.5-liter 70 hp diesel unit (J).

Toyota Coaster Bus
Coaster demand grew with economic growth, as more people found it useful for private transport, small group visits and pick-up services. Coaster dominated the small bus market with Nissan Echo. In a minor change in 1977, Coaster extended the wheelbase, which caused the cabin to grow and its security features also increased.
